PNS HomeGro™ is our black-and-white label, brown-box bulk package (finished product treats 8,000+ gallons!). This unique kit allows users to cultivate larger volumes of PNS bacteria economically using commonplace chemicals and implements. It is also a more environmentally sustainable option, as it significantly reduces shipping/packaging waste.

Each PNS HomeGro™ kit includes three species:

  • Rhodopseudomonas palustris (Freshwater or marine, denitrifier, known coral symbiont)
  • Rhodospirillum rubrum (Freshwater or marine, excellent "carbon dosing" exporter)
  • Rhodobacter sphaeroides (Freshwater or marine, strong biofilm builder)

While each of these species presents its own distinct advantages in aquaria, ponds and hydroponic systems, they may be used in tandem for enhanced efficacy.

  • Each ingredient in the culture medium mix is individually measured per package (to the hundredth of a gram) to ensure excellent uniformity. Therefore, the user should be able to consistently acheive satisfactory results provided that proper sanitation/biosecurity practices are followed. In addition to sterilizing all implements as described below, wash hands/gloves thoughly with antibacterial soap and apply a hand sanitizer. Avoid working in drafty and/or dusty areas.

Pour 1 cap household bleach into culture vessel (use vessel cap). Pour 1 cup hot tap water into vessel. Recap vessel and shake. Uncap vessel and completely pour out bleach water, shaking out last drops (do not rinse). Recap immediately without touching inside of cap.

Bring 3 gallons distilled water to boil in pot. Sterilize implements (stirring spoon, thermometer and funnel) with hydrogen peroxide (preferably by spraying) and place on a sterile surface. Add growth medium powder and stir well. Cut heat and cool pot to 90°C/194°F. Carefully pour into culture vessel through funnel (keep cap on sterile surface). Recap immediately without touching inside of cap.

Cool vessel to room temperature. Remove cap and carefully pour entire contents of inoculum bottle into vessel. Recap with sterilized spigot. Place vessel under continuous, moderate (~5,000 lumens) white light. Maintain incubation temperature of around 29°C/84°F. Allow ~30 days incubation.

As reddish sediment has accumulated on the vessel floor, shake vessel often to accelerate final growth spurt. Culture may be deemed mature when no further growth has occurred for 5 days or more (typically at around one month). Shake vessel just before each use.

Includes: Culture vessel, spigot, growth medium (powder), inoculum (bottle)
